Breaking Golf’s Barriers

The top two players in the world of golf are Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh. In fact, they have become THE rivalry in the golf corner of the sports world. For a sport that has a long history of elitism, racism and sexism, I think this is a wonderful example of the power of open minds to prevail over the stodgy, unwavering folks of old who previously ruled the sport. If you think about, golf has been a real battleground this past year for “progressive” issues and the current ruling bodies of the sport have handled it very well. A woman playing in a PGA event is now not that newsworthy because its no big deal. By way of example take Suzy Whaley. Most people probably don’t know her, but she played in the Greater Hartford Open after qualifying (something Annika did not do for the Colonial as she had a sponsor’s exemption) and received 1/10th of Annika’s press even though it was only a few months after Annika “broke the modern day barrier.” The ironic twist to the story is that Vijay was labeled as Annika’s biggest critic and not so long ago they would have been partners in the struggle to break golf’s barriers.

I know this is old news and I’m certainly not running to join the Martha Burke crowd in protesting the Masters. As I’ve stated before, I’m sure Augusta National will invite a woman member and a private club (although I personally disagree with the policy of no women) should be able to govern its own membership. But, it’s nice to see a sport so characterized by its prejudice nature become an example for how wrong its own views were.

Showdown

Tonight features a rematch between Woodward and Sandy Creek High School, which last year upset the War Eagles to win the region. It should be a scorcher. My only question is, why didn’t the AJC talk to Coach Freer?

BTW, for you out-of-towners, the game is being broadcast live tonight on Comcast. How cool is that?

Pickering goes down again

The Democrats once again showed their willingness to abuse the intent of the Founding Fathers in their hijacking of the Federal Judicial approval process. This is nothing new and Republicans have used the same tactics in the past. But, I’m beginning to wonder if we are destined to have any significant judicial confirmations ever again. I would also think that a large backlog of cases sits waiting for new judges who have yet to be confirmed. What’s the solution? You can’t find a judge without an opinion.
